Met de invoering van nieuwe internationale richtlijnen is het begrip bruto nationaal product (bnp) vervangen door het bruto nationaal inkomen (bni). Deze richtlijnen betreffen het System of National Accounts (SNA ; UN, EU, IMF, OECD, World Bank), paragraaf & [ 1 ] en het European System of National and Regional Accounts nationaal product is de som van alle toegevoegde waarde in een land in een jaar tijd voortgebracht. De toegevoegde waarde is te verdelen in loon, interest, pacht en winst. De som van loon, interest, pacht en winst is weer het nationaal inkom.
